Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Let me tell you what Throne of Glass is by Sarah J. Maas is not.  It is not another vampire, dystopian, pop culture, love story.  Sure there are a couple of guys who are attracted to a girl.  The main character, Celaena Sardothien, even finds them attractive, but this is not another teen romance.  Celaena has growth and a purpose that does not revolve solely around a romantic arc. Did I mention there's magic?  There's also magic. 
The plot follows a girl coming of age in a war torn country.  The back story lets the reader know this girl has experienced tremendous loss and survived as best she could.  Ultimately, the girl landed at a young age in the midst of an assassin's guild.  She makes a name for herself as the best among the assassins.  And in short order, she's carted off to the evil king's death camp.  After struggling to survive for a year in the death camp, the dashing, Prince Dorian, and handsome Captain of the Royal Guard, Chaol, come and offer Celaena a way out.  She must agree to come compete for the opportunity to be the evil king's Champion (aka royal assassin).
 Initially, I thought this is another fantasy romance, but stick with the story.  It never explores the romance because that's not the primary plot.  The primary arc revolves around Celaena's survival and grooming to become the eventual salvation to the downtrodden and enslaved.  The relationships are thoughtful and the characters well planned.  Definitely worth reading!
